Geotechnical drilling
Drilling of exploratory boreholes, undisturbed soil sampling and groundwater observation in Baku and the regions of Azerbaijan.

Geotechnical drilling is the core and most informative part of any engineering geological investigation. A borehole allows direct observation of the sequence and thickness of soil layers, provides samples for the laboratory and records both the initial and the stabilised groundwater level. All other methods, from cone penetration testing to geophysics, are calibrated against drilling data.
The drilling method is chosen according to soil type and project needs. In clay and sand dry drilling is usually preferred to preserve the natural moisture of samples. Undisturbed samples are taken with a dedicated sampler, sealed and transported to the laboratory, while water samples are collected separately for chemical analysis.
For every borehole the geologist keeps a field log describing layers, colour, consistency, inclusions and water strikes. Borehole collars are positioned with a GNSS RTK receiver and levelled, so geological sections match the topographic plan precisely. After completion boreholes are backfilled according to the regulations and the site is left clean.
On the Absheron Peninsula drilling often meets made ground, limestone layers and saline water, and our experienced crew knows how to keep sample quality high in these conditions.
