Underground utility survey

Beneath any city lie decades of water, sewer, gas, power, telecom and heating lines, and for many of them accurate records either do not exist or are out of date. Striking a cable or gas pipe during excavation can cause dangerous accidents and serious financial losses. An underground utility survey removes that risk and lets designers place new networks without clashing with existing ones.

Metallic pipes and cables are traced with an electromagnetic locator in active (with a signal generator) and passive modes, and their alignment and approximate depth are marked on the ground. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is used for plastic pipes, concrete ducts and other non-metallic features. All manholes are opened and cover and invert levels, pipe diameters, materials and directions are measured, with every detected point coordinated by GNSS RTK or total station.

The result is a 1:500 topographic plan with a separate layer for each network type, plus manhole sketches and schedules. The service is ordered before construction starts, for road and square reconstruction, for new network design and for as-built surveys of newly laid lines.

Where needed, findings are compared with the archive records of the network owners and any discrepancies are reported separately.

When you need it

  • Before excavation and construction work
  • Designing new utility networks
  • Reconstruction of roads, streets and squares
  • As-built survey of newly laid lines
  • Inventory of old and undocumented networks

What's included

  • Tracing metallic pipes and cables with an electromagnetic locator
  • Searching for non-metallic pipes and ducts with GPR
  • Opening manholes, measuring cover and invert levels
  • Determining diameters, materials and depths
  • Coordinating detected points with GNSS RTK or total station
  • Plotting networks on the plan by type

How we work

  1. Gathering existing schemes and archive data
  2. Sweeping the site with locator and GPR
  3. Opening and measuring manholes
  4. Coordinating detected lines
  5. Drafting plan, sketches and schedules, then handover

Deliverables

  • Underground utility plan at 1:500 (DWG, PDF)
  • Manhole sketches and schedules
  • Coordinate list of detected lines
  • Technical report
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can plastic pipes be detected too?

Yes, we use ground-penetrating radar for non-metallic pipes. Detection depth varies with soil composition and moisture.

How accurately is depth determined?

Locators give an approximate depth whose accuracy depends on line depth and nearby networks. In manholes depths are measured directly.

How long does the survey take?

A small site usually takes 1–2 working days. Dense urban areas and long routes take longer.

What does the price depend on?

Area or route length, number of networks and whether GPR is needed. Use the calculator on our website for an estimate or call us.
