GIS mapping

GIS maps and spatial databases with attributes for land, utility networks and parcels, produced in ArcGIS and QGIS in Baku and across Azerbaijan.

GIS mapping

A GIS (Geographic Information System) stores, analyses and visualises spatial data, the location, shape and descriptive information of objects, in a single map database. Unlike an ordinary drawing, every object on a GIS map, such as a pipe, pole, building or land parcel, carries attributes: diameter, material, installation date, owner, condition and so on.

GIS maps are used by municipalities and utilities for network inventories, by land administrators for parcel records, and in urban and regional planning, agriculture and forestry, environmental monitoring and the management of linear assets by oil, gas and power companies. Searching, filtering, distance and area analysis on the map take seconds.

Maps are produced both from field surveys (GNSS RTK, total station and ground-penetrating radar for buried utilities) and by digitising existing materials such as paper plans, satellite and drone orthophotos and AutoCAD drawings. Data is topologically checked, organised into layers, attribute tables are populated, and everything is combined in one coordinate system: the national grid, WGS-84 or UTM zone 39N.

The result is delivered as an ArcGIS and QGIS project, a geodatabase (GeoPackage, File Geodatabase, Shapefile) and thematic maps for printing, and can be published as a web map if required.

When you need it

  • A utility network inventory and asset register is being compiled
  • Land parcels and property need map-based records
  • Spatial analysis is needed for urban or regional planning
  • Paper plans and old drawings must be combined in one database
  • A map is required to manage linear assets such as pipelines or power lines

What's included

  • Collecting and reviewing existing materials
  • Field survey and buried utility detection
  • Digitising paper plans and drawings
  • Designing layers and attribute structure
  • Topology checks and data cleaning
  • Thematic maps and optional web map

How we work

  1. Agreeing data structure and map purpose
  2. Collecting existing materials and field data
  3. Digitising and populating attributes
  4. Quality control
  5. Delivery of the GIS project and maps

Deliverables

  • ArcGIS/QGIS project

  • Thematic maps for printing (PDF)
  • Optional web map and user guide
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is a GIS map different from an ordinary map?

On a GIS map every object is linked to a database, so it can be searched, filtered, analysed and updated. An ordinary map is just an image.

Can AutoCAD drawings be converted to GIS?

Yes. Drawings are georeferenced, layers are converted into GIS features and attributes are added.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the area, the quality of existing materials and the amount of fieldwork: small projects take one to two weeks, large areas are delivered in stages.

What does the price depend on?

On the area, the number of objects and attributes and the amount of fieldwork. Use the calculator on our website or call us for an estimate.
