Geotechnical survey for gas and water pipelines

Gas, water and sewer pipelines operate underground for decades, so their reliability depends directly on soil properties. Uneven settlement along the route causes stress in the pipe, while aggressive soil and groundwater accelerate corrosion of steel pipes and deterioration of concrete manholes. A geotechnical survey identifies these risks in advance.

Boreholes are drilled along the centreline and at crossings under roads, canals, rivers and railways. We study soil composition, excavation category, trench wall stability, groundwater level and its seasonal fluctuation. Where horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is planned, the ground structure at the crossing is investigated in particular detail.

Soil and water samples are tested for corrosivity to steel and concrete, salt content and electrical resistivity, which forms the basis for selecting cathodic protection and coating type. In the saline soils of Absheron these values are often high, so we pay special attention to them.

Results are presented as a longitudinal geological profile together with the topographic plan of the route and are used by the designer to choose pipe burial depth and trench solutions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is a geological survey important for a pipeline?

Knowing the risks of settlement, landslides and corrosion in advance ensures trouble-free operation. It also allows the right choice of coating and cathodic protection.

How is corrosivity determined?

Salt content, pH and electrical resistivity are measured in soil and water samples and compared with code tables to define the degree of aggressiveness.

How long does it take for long routes?

It depends on the route length and the number of crossings. A schedule is provided together with the programme.
