Geotechnical survey for road construction

The durability of a road depends first of all on the soil beneath it. A subgrade built on weak, swelling or saline soil deforms quickly, leading to cracks, rutting and potholes. A geotechnical survey for road construction studies soil variability along the route and provides the data needed to design the subgrade, pavement layers and drainage correctly.

Boreholes are drilled at regular intervals along the centreline and additionally at bridges, overpasses, deep cuts and high embankments. We determine particle size distribution, optimum moisture and maximum dry density (Proctor test), plasticity, salinity and swelling. Where required, the suitability of local construction materials such as sand and gravel is also assessed.

On the lowlands of Azerbaijan saline soils and shallow groundwater, and in the foothills landslides and mudflows, strongly influence road design. These processes are described separately in the report together with recommended engineering measures.

Geological data is prepared in the same coordinate system as the topographic survey (state system or UTM zone 39N) and can be used directly in road design software such as Civil 3D and Credo.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How far apart are boreholes along the route?

Spacing is set in the programme according to road category and terrain complexity. At structures and problem areas boreholes are placed closer together.

Why is saline soil dangerous for roads?

Salts dissolve when wetted, so the soil weakens and settles, and pavement and concrete elements corrode. The report lists measures to prevent this.

What does the price depend on?
