Geotechnical survey for multi-storey buildings

A multi-storey building transfers large and uneven loads to the ground and usually requires a deep excavation for an underground car park or basement. Here a geotechnical survey does more than describe soil layers: it provides reliable parameters for designing pile or piled-raft foundations, excavation support and dewatering.

The investigation programme is based on the number of storeys, the foundation type and the depth of the underground part. Boreholes are drilled along the building footprint to depths below the zone of foundation influence. Drilling is combined with cone penetration testing, plate load tests and, where required, static load testing of trial piles, while soil samples undergo a full range of laboratory tests.

In the 8–9 intensity seismic zones of Baku the seismic soil category plays a decisive role in structural design, so we recommend complementing geological work with geophysical surveys. Saline and aggressive soils, high groundwater and old fill layers are assessed separately in the report.

The report is prepared according to the applicable building codes (AzDTN/SNiP) and can be submitted for design review. Geological data is delivered in the same coordinate system as the topographic plan and the BIM model.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How deep are the boreholes?

It depends on the building load and foundation type: boreholes go below the zone of foundation influence. For piles they extend well beyond the pile tips.

Is a geophysical survey also needed?

It is recommended for multi-storey buildings in seismic zones to refine the soil category. We also carry out geophysical work under our licence.

How long does the report take?

It depends on the number of boreholes and the scope of testing, usually several weeks. A detailed schedule comes with the programme.

How is the price calculated?

Based on drilling metres, the number of in-situ tests and the laboratory scope. Send us the technical brief and we will prepare a proposal.
