Groundwater investigation
Study of groundwater level, flow direction, chemistry and aggressiveness to concrete for proper basement and foundation design.

Knowing how deep groundwater lies, how it changes through the seasons and what it contains is essential for designing basements, underground car parks and foundations. Without this information the type of waterproofing, the need for drainage and the concrete grade cannot be justified. A groundwater investigation answers these questions.
Water levels are measured in boreholes on first strike and after stabilisation, and data from several boreholes is used to map the groundwater surface and flow direction. Water samples are analysed in the laboratory for total mineralisation, sulphate and chloride ions, pH and aggressive carbon dioxide. Based on the results, the degree of aggressiveness to concrete and reinforcement is determined.
Groundwater levels vary with the seasons, rainfall, utility leaks and nearby construction. For long-term forecasting, boreholes can be kept as observation wells with regular level readings over a set period, and the report states the predicted maximum level.
On the Absheron Peninsula groundwater is often highly mineralised and sulphate attack is common, so the choice of sulphate-resistant cement and reliable waterproofing is particularly important. The report follows the applicable codes (AzDTN/SNiP).
