3D scanning of historic monuments
Non-contact 3D laser scanning of historic monuments: accurate measurements for restoration design, a digital archive and visualisation.

Azerbaijan has a rich architectural heritage: fortress walls, mosques, caravanserais, bathhouses, mausoleums and buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries. Accurate documentation of their present condition is the first step towards restoration and protection. 3D laser scanning records the full geometry with millimetre accuracy without touching or damaging the surface.
Scanning is carried out with static scanners and, for narrow passages, towers and cellars, with a handheld SLAM scanner. The point cloud is combined with high-resolution photographs to produce a coloured 3D model in which masonry texture, carved ornaments and damage are clearly visible.
For restoration architects we derive measured plans, elevations, sections, orthophotos and deformation maps from the scan. Wall inclination, the shape of arches and domes, and the location and size of cracks are depicted precisely. These documents form the basis of the restoration design and are used for approval by the relevant authorities.
The digital model also serves as a permanent archive: if damage occurs in the future, the recorded condition is a reliable source for reconstruction. The model can be used for virtual tours, museum displays and education.
