3D scanning of parts

High-accuracy 3D scanning of parts, products and assemblies, mesh and CAD model preparation, and quality inspection against the design model.

3D scanning of parts

A 3D scan captures the entire surface of a part digitally as millions of points. Unlike reverse engineering, this service is mainly about documenting the exact geometry of an existing object, comparing it with the design model, or creating a digital copy for design, 3D printing and visualisation. It is used by engineers, manufacturers, designers, museums and restoration specialists.

Small and medium parts are scanned with structured-light or laser handheld scanners, which, depending on the model, achieve accuracy of a tenth of a millimetre or better. Large products and equipment are captured with terrestrial laser scanners (±2–6 mm). Shiny and transparent surfaces are prepared with a matting spray where necessary, and targets are placed on large objects.

The scan produces a watertight STL/OBJ mesh. On request we build a simplified or parametric CAD model from it, and compare it with the design model to produce a colour deviation map and inspection report. This is a reliable tool for production quality control, pre-assembly fit checks and detecting deformation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between 3D scanning and reverse engineering?

A 3D scan records the geometry as it is. Reverse engineering uses that data to create a parametric model and drawings for manufacturing.

What size of objects can you scan?

From parts a few centimetres long to large equipment and structures; the scanner is chosen to suit the object.

How long does scanning take?

A small part is scanned in a few hours; processing and reporting take 1–3 working days.

What does the price depend on?

Object size, surface complexity, required accuracy and output format. Use the website calculator for an estimate or call us.
