Environmental and geological maps

Engineering geological, hydrogeological and environmental maps: soils, groundwater, geohazards and contamination zones in GIS.

Environmental and geological maps

Environmental and geological maps present the natural conditions of an area: soil composition and properties, groundwater levels, hazardous processes such as landslides, flooding and erosion, and the contamination status of soil and water. Such maps are a key source for site selection, design, environmental impact assessment and land-use planning.

This information is especially important for the Absheron Peninsula and other regions of Azerbaijan: some areas have shallow groundwater, soil salinisation, landslide-prone slopes and land contaminated with petroleum products. A map shows these risks clearly and helps specialists make well-founded decisions.

The maps are prepared from the results of engineering geological and hydrogeological investigations (boreholes, laboratory tests, geophysical measurements), analyses of environmental samples, topographic surveys and terrain models, drone imagery and existing archive materials. The data are combined in GIS, interpolation is carried out between boreholes, and a separate layer is created for each parameter.

Deliverables include engineering geological zoning, groundwater depth maps, geohazard distribution maps or contamination zone maps, together with an explanatory note.

When you need it

  • A site is being selected or assessed for construction
  • Maps are needed for an environmental impact assessment (EIA)
  • Landslide, flooding or erosion risks must be analysed
  • Boundaries of contaminated land must be defined
  • A master plan or land-use plan is being prepared

What's included

  • Collecting and analysing investigation and archive data
  • Preparing the topographic base and terrain model
  • Entering borehole and sample data into a GIS database
  • Interpolation and zoning
  • Mapping geohazards and contamination zones
  • Legend and explanatory note

How we work

  1. Agreeing map purpose, scale and parameters
  2. Collecting source data and fieldwork if needed
  3. Building the GIS database and analysis

  • Explanatory note
  • Optional sections and tables
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do new boreholes need to be drilled to make a geological map?

Not always. If there is enough archive data for the area, the map can be based on it. Where data are lacking, additional drilling and testing are recommended.

What is engineering geological zoning?

It is the division of an area into zones that are similar for construction purposes, based on soil type, properties and hydrogeological conditions. It helps designers assess the type of foundation in advance.

Can environmental maps be used for an EIA?

Yes. Maps of contamination zones, sensitive areas and natural conditions are prepared as part of environmental impact assessment documentation.

What does the price depend on?

On the size of the area, scale, number of maps, availability of source data and whether fieldwork is needed. Call us for an exact quote.
