Scan to CAD modelling
Building an editable solid or parametric CAD model from 3D scan data — a point cloud or mesh — ready for design and manufacturing.

A 3D scan records the surface of an object as millions of points or a triangulated mesh, but this data cannot be edited directly in CAD software. The Scan to CAD service converts scan data into a solid or parametric CAD model that engineers can work with. Such a model can be used to change dimensions, design new parts, produce drawings and program CNC machining.
Two approaches are used depending on the task. In parametric modelling, planes, cylinders, cones, holes and threads are rebuilt as geometric features that follow the design intent, and the feature tree remains editable. For freeform surfaces such as cast housings, blades or design objects, surface modelling is used to create accurate NURBS surfaces.
The finished model is compared with the scan data and checked with a colour deviation map, so its accuracy is documented. The result is delivered in STEP, IGES, Parasolid or the CAD format the client uses. We can carry out the scanning ourselves or work with existing scan files supplied by the client.
